Short description of the project: The project objective is to design and develop an intelligent tutoring system based on the Evolutionary Biology thesis that uses facial and vocal features, relevant for a specific learning context, in order to change a virtual teacher in an asynchronous e-learning environment.   

Specific objectives:

  1. Design and development of a module for learner’s voice and face modeling;
  2. Design and develop of a virtual teacher;
  3. Design and development of algorithms and protocols in order to change the virtual teacher according to the information received from the learner modeling module. ;
  4. Development of a double set of educational digital resources for validation and evaluation (one set with virtual teacher and other one without it);
  5. Validation of SAPIENT’s components by the learning efficiency  analysis  and students satisfaction;
  6. Integration of the experimental modules in a prototype  based on SOA (Service Oriented Architecture);
  7. The consortium know-how increase of the relevant theories and technologies;
  8. Integration in the participant company’s business plans a patent that supports long term commercial development after the project closing.

In 2012, during the first stage, there were performed 5 research activities – development (activity category A2), each of these activities resulted in a practical outcome – technical report (D1.1 – D1.5):

  • Technical report D1.1 – Study on the physical characteristics of human beings, relevant to the instructional processes (learning - teaching);
  • Technical report D1.2 – Study on all the animated teachers and their relevance to the projection of educational content and educational platforms;
  • Technical report D1.3 – Study on the  real time display techniques and technologies of animated teachers;
  • Technical reportD1.4 – Study on 3D display technologies of virtual users using 2D characteristics;
  • Technical report D1.5 – Study on real time voice generating technologies based on particular models.

According to the project specifications, all the reports (D1.1 – D1.5) are for the internal purposes only, being available only for the consortium partners.

In 2013, during the second stage, 3 research activities were performed– development (activity category A2), each of these activities resulted in a practical outcome – technical report (D2.1 – D2.3):

  • Report D2.1. User interaction architecture in SAPIENT system;
  • Report D2.2. Specifications of the UM experimental module – Modeling user’s characteristics;
  • Report D2.3. Specifications of the AM experimental – Virtual teacher.

According to the project’s specifications, all the reports (D2.1– D1.5) are for internal purposes only, being available only for the consortium partners.
